In the past year, Birthright of Lincoln has helped more than 100 pregnant women and their unborn babies with support.
Birthright of Lincoln has helped women continually since 1971. The organization offers emotional support, as well as funding for new cribs and mattresses or car seats, diapers and other items such as portions of rental deposits, formula, food and more.
“When we help the women, we are also helping each unborn baby and an untold number of other children in the household,” said Marty Miller, who is co-director of Birthright with Jeanne Tunnison.
Numbers have grown quickly in the last year. Statistics show more women and girls coming to Birthright for material items, but also for pregnancy testing.
“This is not a coincidence,” Miller said. “Women and girls are learning that Birthright values life – not only theirs, but also their unborn baby’s life.”
Birthright sees a larger number of minority and low-income women approaching the organization for assistance. Birthright covers all creeds, nationalities and religions, and its services are confidential.
They have also seen an increase in women with very young children who choose to welcome an ‘unplanned’ child.
“We have seen several past clients we helped previously become more determined to have their babies because ‘Birthright has their back,’” Miller related.
Indeed Birthright, “a confidential friend for life,” stands ready to help all who find themselves in a crisis situation, or are perhaps, looking for someone with whom they can talk.
In fact, Miller said Birthright’s volunteers have also assisted men who visited the office when their girlfriends were determined to abort their children.
“Next time you see one of our 24 volunteers, and a huge number of past volunteers, please take a moment to thank them for all their years selflessly helping women choose life,” Miller said.
