The Eagles basketball team of Villa Marie School in Waverly earned first place in its division at the Special Olympics regional competition Saturday, March 2, at Lincoln Northwest High School.
Volunteer coaches Matt Jilek and Greg Gibney, both members of St. Joseph Parish in Lincoln, led the team to victories over the Kearney Clumsy Monkeys and the Nebraska Aviators to earn the first-place title.
“We played up a division this year,” Jelik said, “facing adults. Both games were real nail-biters, which was great for the kids and the fans.”
With the win, the Eagles advance to the state competition, which will be held April 6.
