Aquinas Catholic Schools in David City celebrated vocations Friday, March 1, with two Aquinas graduates and a former Division I basketball player.
Father Scott Nemec, a 2012 graduate of Aquinas, led the stations of the cross in the chapel where, he said, he first encountered the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist as a student at Aquinas Catholic. He urged the students, especially the seniors, to embrace the opportunities to be in the presence of Jesus and to remain open to Him.
Sister Fiat Marie, a 2010 Aquinas graduate, playfully shared her experience of being a “college drop-out” before finding her vocation with the School Sisters of Christ the King.
Sister M. Xavier Schulz recounted her journey from playing Division I basketball at Ohio State to becoming a Sister of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George. Sister Xavier candidly discussed her transition from seeking perfection to following God’s plan and shared what it feels like to hear the call of Jesus to become His bride.
Sister Xavier joined Apostolates and Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George on the basketball court for a friendly three-on-three game against Aquinas senior boys. The game turned into a four-on-four match when Father Nemec joined the sisters’ team. Video of the game is available on Aquinas Catholic’s Facebook page.
Father Nemec and the sisters spent the rest of the school day at Aquinas Catholic Elementary. The sisters visited classrooms and joined the children in games on the playground, even football.
