The Eagles basketball team from Villa Marie School for Exceptional Children in Waverly captured the school’s fourth straight state title at the Special Olympics Nebraska Spring Games basketball tournament April 7.

This year’s event did not have teams of similarly-aged players, so the Eagles had to play “up” a division.

“The expression ‘they may be giants’ was not an exaggeration when we looked at the other teams we were about to play,” said Matt Jilek, head coach.

Coach Greg Gibney said the sports metaphor of David and Goliath “really rang true when our team stepped on the court; but we prepare them all the time for tough challenges.”

Villa Marie School does not have a gymnasium, so the Eagles have been practicing in the garage where the school bus normally parks. Practices start in early October and run until the state games in April.

“Villa Marie is developing children that are coachable, respectful, and great teammates to each other,” Jilek said. “Everyone tries their best and it is a true reflection of the environment here at Villa Marie.”

In the team’s first game of the tournament, the Eagles defeated the Crunchy Monkeys of Kearney 22 to 12 and advanced to the finals.
In the finals, the Eagles faced Scottsbluff’s Thunder, who previously beat one of the Eagles’ opponents by 20 points. The game was tied 12-12 at halftime.

“We knew our players were up for the challenge in the second half,” said Gibney. “We have conditioned them to be in this very spot in our practices.”

He was correct; the Eagles won the game 22-16.

“It is such a wonderful experience working with the kids,” Jilek said. “We could not have the success we have had without the support of those who have dedicated their careers and lives to Villa Marie.” He added that he and Gibney especially thanked the Knights of Columbus, who purchased the players’ new athletic gear the past three seasons.

“You would not believe the smiles of pure joy when they receive their new shoes,” he said.
