The Serra Club of Lincoln presented three scholarships April 19, to students who won the organization’s essay contest.
Members of the Serra Club of Lincoln are Catholic men who are active in their parishes and committed to promoting vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The members also strive to further Catholicism by encouraging members, in fellowship, through education, to fulfill vocations to service.
The essay theme for this year was chosen considering the upcoming National Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for July 17-21 in Indianapolis.
The Eucharistic Congress is the first to be held in the United States in 83 years. It is part of the ongoing National Eucharistic Revival.
A total of 172 students from seven Catholic schools in Lincoln participated in the contest, demonstrating their ability to express their thoughts effectively through writing.
Among them, said Bede Bolin, president of the Serra Club, the top three winners’ essays were “particularly outstanding, exhibiting a deep understanding, creativity, originality, and profound theological insights into the Eucharist.”
He said the winners’ essays resonated with readers, reflecting the impact of their writing.
The three winning students were honored during a Serra Club luncheon Friday, April 19, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. The students were accompanied by their parents, principal, and teachers, as well as the principal of Pius X High School.
The top three winners were awarded scholarships to Pius X High School. The first-place recipient, Madeline Schinstock, received a $1,000 scholarship. Eleanor Pfeiffer, second place, earned a $500 scholarship, and Annie Brox, third place, received a $250 scholarship.
All three scholarship winners were from St. Teresa Elementary School. Each read their winning essays aloud during the luncheon.
