The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies added to its staff June 1 with the addition of Dr. John Kincaid as vice president of academics.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Dr. Kincaid earned his Ph.D. in theology from Ave Maria University in 2015. Previously he earned a master of theology from Duke University, a master of arts in theology from Covenant Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s in theology from Geneva College. He and his wife Kristen have seven children.
Dr. Kincaid is the co-author of “Paul, A New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology with Dr. Brant Pitre and Dr. Michael Barber.” Before joining The Emmaus Institute, he served as the chair and associate professor of theology at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. Prior to that, he was a member of the theology faculty at John Paul the Great Catholic University as well as at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
His research interests center on Pauline theology and its reception history, the soteriology (doctrine of salvation) of Augustine and Aquinas, and the challenges of contemporary biblical hermeneutics (interpretation of language). Dr. Kincaid is currently finishing a manuscript on the theme of justification in the Pauline letters. He is also working on a forthcoming book on St. Paul and the priesthood, co-authored with Father John Riccardo of ACTS XXIX.
In his new role as vice president of academics, Dr. Kincaid will oversee all of the academic affairs of The Emmaus Institute and will help to expand its mission and vision with the production of new resources for formation and by pursuing collaborative relationships with like-minded scholars and apostolates. Dr. Kincaid will begin his work at Emmaus remotely from Bismarck, giving him the opportunity to remain close to family. Emmaus students can study with Dr. Kincaid virtually, with occasional in-person classes and events in Lincoln.
“It was quickly apparent to all of us that John passionately shares the spirit of Emmaus and that his addition to the team was providentially ordered,” said Dr. Vern Steiner, president of Emmaus. “His academic record attests to the quality of his scholarship and professionalism, but most importantly, he is a man who serves his vocation to his family as a faithful husband and father who loves the Lord, and who is passionate about sharing that love with all who listen.”
