The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies will enter its sixth year of operation with five new fall courses.

Each course is 12 weeks in duration, in a slightly expanded semester format. The semester will begin the week of Aug. 19 and end the week of Nov. 11, with a one-week break in the middle. Three courses will be available both in person and by video, one synchronously online and by video, and one in person only. Registrations are now open for all five courses.

The first course is “Encountering the Heart of God in the Psalms” with Emmaus president Dr. Vern Steiner. This is a free course designed to draw participants closer to the heart of God by entering more deeply and fully into the study of the Bible’s most beloved book of prayers and praises on the journey of faith. The course is available in person Thursdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Aug. 22, and by video.

“Creation to New Creation: The Gospels and Acts,” with associate teacher Joshua Burks, will focus on encountering the person of Jesus the Lord at the center of the whole biblical drama, and exploring his saving mission as revealed in the Gospels and continued in the Acts of the Apostles. The course is available in person Mondays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 19, and by video.

A course that is part of Cohort A, for priests and catechists, is “Creation to New Creation: The Pentateuch,” with associate teacher Chad Steiner. As the beginning of the book-by-book journey through the entire Bible, this course will explore the foundational role of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) in understanding the whole Bible and in meeting the God revealed there. The course is available in person Tuesdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 20, and by video.

Emmaus Vice President of Academics, Dr. John Kincaid will teach “The Apostle: An Introduction to Paul’s Theology.” This course will examine each of St. Paul’s letters with a view to discovering why his teachings “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6), appreciating his apostolic role in the life of the Church, and declaring with him that nothing can compare to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus the Lord. The course is available synchronously online Wednesdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning Aug. 21, and by video.

In response to growing interest, “Elementary Biblical Greek I” with Dr. Vern Steiner will be offered. The course is for Greek “beginners, toddlers, forgetters, and up-graders who desire to dive into the language in which the New Testament was first written with a view to experiencing the joy of hearing God speak in one of the Bible’s native tongues.” The course is available in person only Wednesdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 21.
