The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln’s weekly Mass for the Homebound is expanding its reach.

The Mass has been broadcast for decades on local television stations in the state. In addition to stations in Lincoln and Hastings, the Mass for the Homebound is now available on KNOP-TV News 2 in North Platte.

The Mass is made available for those whose health does not allow them to attend Sunday Mass in person at their local parish. Non-Catholics can also be introduced to the faith through the broadcasts. The Masses are produced by the Communications office of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln with the help of priests, acolytes, lectors, cantors and organists volunteering their time.

“We know how important this ministry is to those confined to their homes, in retirement homes or assisted living centers or in the hospital,” said Dennis Kellogg, director of communications for the diocese. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to expand into North Platte and west-central Nebraska, making the broadcast available to more of our parishioners across the diocese.”

The Mass for the Homebound is broadcast each Sunday at 9 a.m. on KLKN-TV in Lincoln, 9:30 a.m. on KSNB-TV Local 4 in Hastings and 9:30 a.m. on KNOP-TV News 2 in North Platte. All times are Central Time. The Mass is also available on demand, any time, on the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln YouTube channel. Masses for each Sunday are added to the channel beginning at 4 p.m. Central on Saturdays.

A funding source for the Mass for the Homebound broadcasts on one of the Nebraska stations has been discontinued, so the diocese is now responsible for that cost. The annual charge to broadcast the Mass on the three Nebraska television stations each year is more than $70,000.

“We will be facing financial challenges for our Mass for the Homebound in the future. We hope to be able to provide this valuable service for many years to come. We will continue to work efficiently and trust in God to guide its future,” Kellogg said.

The Diocese of Lincoln depends on donations for the Mass for the Homebound from local parishes, individual parishioners and Catholic organizations such as local altar societies, Knights of Columbus councils, local Catholic Daughters of the Americas courts, the Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and Parish Councils of Catholic Women. Individuals have also given memorials in honor of loved ones who have died and included the Mass for the Homebound in their estate planning.
