The Nebraska Catholic Conference presented a panel event with a question-and-answer period Sept. 16 in the gymnasium at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ School in Lincoln.
The event was titled “Unsafe. Unregulated. Un-Nebraskan.”
Msgr. Thomas Fucinaro, pastor of the Cathedral, served as moderator. Speakers included Bishop James Conley, Tom Venzor, the executive director of the Nebraska Catholic Conference, and Dr. Catherine Brooks, a neonatal intensive care unit physician.

The panelists explained why Nebraskans need to learn about the dangerous measure on the ballot this fall, Initiative 439, which would lead to unregulated abortion throughout the state of Nebraska.
The Initiative would create a right to late-pregnancy abortion, force taxpayers to fund abortion, threaten health and safety regulations, put vulnerable babies at risk, allow abortion facility employees to determine viability, and remove parental rights.
The panelists also spoke about Initiative 434, a pro-life ballot measure launched by medical professionals. It would provide protections for preborn babies in the second and third trimesters. The pro-life proposal does not affect Nebraska’s current pro-life law, which protects preborn babies at 12 weeks with exceptions for rape, incest, and medical emergency, and it leaves intact countless other health and safety laws passed over the last 50 years to protect women and babies from abortion.
“Literally before us, I present to you life and death,” Msgr. Fucinaro said. “That’s what we will, in fact, be doing. We have before us the opportunity to affect what will be the final outcome. It’s a decision that, no doubt, will affect generations, no matter what way it goes.”
