'Our Lady’s promises, protection'

Southern Nebraska Register

Individuals seeking spiritual renewal are invited to a transformative silent retreat Nov. 22-24, focused on the brown scapular and the veneration of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

The retreat will take place at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House near Waverly.

The weekend will begin Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. with a rosary and Mass. Participants will immerse themselves in the sacramental traditions and devotions associated with the brown scapular, learning about its significance as a spiritual weapon and symbol of protection.

Father Elias Mary Mills, F.I., a seasoned missionary priest with extensive experience promoting devotion to Our Lady, will lead the retreat.

“Of Mary, one can never say enough,” Father Elias said. “Devotion to Mary is absolutely essential and central to becoming an imitator of Christ and bringing His love to the world.”

His insights will guide retreatants through the history of the scapular, the importance of wearing it, and the promises made by Our Lady for those who commit to her protection.

Father Elias, who began discerning his religious vocation before graduating from Kearney State College, joined the Franciscans of the Immaculate in 1993. He was ordained a priest in the Jubilee Year 2000, and since then, has traveled internationally, sharing the message of devotion to Mary in places such as Australia and Italy.

The retreat will conclude Sunday, Nov. 24, with Mass and a noon lunch, providing an opportunity for fellowship and reflection on the weekend’s teachings.
