Southern Nebraska Register
The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies is offering two five-week courses beginning Jan. 6 and concluding Feb. 5. Both are available in person, live online, and by recorded video.
Mother of the Word
“The Mother of the Word: A Biblical Study of Mary” will explore how Scripture reveals the Mother of the Word. Taught by Joshua Burks, the course will examine various Old Testament passages which shed informing light on the person and role of Mary. Following that, every reference to Mary in the New Testament will be considered, showing how it draws from and builds on what is developed in the Old Testament.
In this way, students will meet the Blessed Mother of the Lord and of the Church through the lens of Scripture’s own magnificent revelation. This class will meet on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 through Feb. 5, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Scripture and ministry
“Scripture and Ministry in an Apostolic Age” is a capstone course for students enrolled in Emmaus’ three-year “Creation to New Creation” program. The course seeks to move from auditing to applying, with a view to equipping students to “open the word” (Luke 24:32, 45) in their vocations, parishes, schools, and other settings.
To that end, the course will consider the centrality of Scripture in the Church’s mission, the role of an equipped laity, and fitness for the task of teaching the Bible in an apostolic age, with two praxis labs aimed at synthesis and application. Team-taught by Vern Steiner, Chad Steiner, and Joshua Burks, this class will meet Mondays, Jan. 6 through Feb. 3, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Registration details for interterm courses and for the fuller line-up of spring semester courses beginning in February are available at www.emmausinstitute.net.
