Retired priest Father Anthony E. Stammitti died Jan. 17, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. He was 78.
Father Stammitti was born in Wauwatosa, Wisc., and was ordained a priest May 5, 1991, in New Westminster, British Columbia by Bishop Jermone Chimy, OSBM, for the Eparchy of British Columbia for the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Rite. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Lincoln May 8, 1997. He served as parochial vicar at St. John Nepomucene Church in Weston and St. Wenceslaus Church in Wahoo. He transferred to the Diocese of Fargo, N.D. that fall, where he ministered until 2002.
Upon returning to the Diocese of Lincoln, Father Stammitti served in various capacities in the city of Lincoln. He was assistant chaplain for nursing homes and prisons, with residence at Sacred Heart Parish. He moved to residency at Cristo Rey in 2005 and took on the responsibilities of pastoral ministry for the correctional institutions, and pastoral care of the nursing and retirement homes in the vicinity of Lincoln. In 2007 he took on the pastoral care for the Nebraska Heart Hospital in addition to his previous assignments.
Father Stammitti retired from active ministry Oct. 1, 2017.
Bishop James Conley celebrated his funeral Mass Jan. 20 in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery. Butherus, Maser, and Love Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
