The Nebraska Catholic Nurses organization partnered with Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) in Lincoln March 15 for a service event.

The nurses did a street walk beginning at 10 a.m. They invited people living in their cars and on the streets to come for lunch and a pedicure.

While a pedicure maybe a luxury for many people, for those in need, it means far more.

“Proper foot care is crucial, for our feet provide mobility and overall are crucial for our well-being,” ” explained Dotti Easter, one of the founders of the Nebraska Catholic Nurses. “Foot health can be a clue to your overall health. This is especially important for the poor and underserved.”

Often, she said, those in need may not be able to afford shoes. If they own shoes, they may be ill-fitting, or they may not be able to afford socks.

“All of this leads to open wounds on the feet, predisposing them to disease, injury or other illnesses,” Easter said.

The nurses washed feet, inspected skin, dressed wounds and trimmed and filed toenails. In some cases, the need for care was so great that the guests’ shoes fit better afterward. CSS then provided a hot meal and fellowship, from noon to 2 p.m.

“God is so good!” Easter said.

The Nebraska Catholic Nurses group, a member of the Catholic Medical Association, was started in 2023 by Sister Joan Kolbe, M.S., Sister Faustina, M.S. and Dotti Easter of St. Benedict Parish in Nebraska City.

The Nebraska Catholic Nurses’ next event will be a retreat held Saturday, April 26. Father Christopher Kubat, who was a practicing physician before he was ordained a priest, will present “How the ethical and religious directives give us hope.”

The retreat will be held at St. Mary Church, 1625 Adams St., Ashland. It will begin at 9 a.m. with Mass, followed by breakfast. Father Kubat’s reflection will take place at 10 a.m. and adoration will follow from 11 a.m. to noon.
