Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) held its 38th annual “Celebration of Hope” gala and silent auction at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lincoln March 15, with more than 450 attendees.

The event marked a significant milestone as it introduced a new, interactive element designed to deepen attendees’ understanding of the challenges faced by CSS clients. For the first time in the event’s history, organizers included a guided activity aimed at offering guests an immersive experience into the lives of those they serve.

“This guided activity was one of the closest ways to give people an opportunity to experience who we work with and what we do every day,” said Katie Patrick, CSS executive director. “It was a unique opportunity to see the challenges some people face, the barriers they’ve overcome, and how CSS has been there for our clients through our Family Support Services program.”

Each table was presented with three envelopes containing scenarios based on real-life challenges faced by CSS clients – although participants didn’t know these were real-life situations at the time the exercise began. Participants were asked to discuss the situations, which ranged from financial hardship to personal loss. One example involved a family struggling to pay bills after a hospital stay by relying on credit cards and cashing out retirement funds, only to face even greater hardship when their car was stolen and totaled.

Attendees were then prompted to consider alternative solutions, and to reflect on how such challenges might impact families. After the attendees’ discussions, video testimony was presented, in which a client and staff member explained how the real-life situations were handled.

“I didn’t realize the extent to what CSS does for its clients,” said Sandy Vandewalle, a long-time supporter of nonprofit organizations and their fundraisers. “It’s sad that people have to face these extreme situations, but it’s also reassuring that help is available.”

Patrick Henry, another attendee, reflected on the power of the guided activity, calling it the evening’s highlight.

“Since CSS made this an interactive activity that called for input from everyone at our table, my wife and I left feeling closer to those around us and with everyone in attendance that night,” he said. “It was such a unique experience, and I’m so grateful for all CSS does for so many in need.”

The evening also included the presentation of the “Heart of Christ Award” to Mike Hosek of Lincoln, an individual who embodies the spirit of servant leadership. The award is given annually to someone who exemplifies the core values of CSS through their actions and impact. In accepting the award, Hosek was praised for his ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity through the “Walk to End Hunger initiative,” an event he first spearheaded in Lincoln in 2021.

“His story is a powerful reminder that changing the world doesn’t always mean doing something on a grand scale,” said Katie Patrick. “It just means saying ‘yes’ to the opportunities that come our way.”

Hosek, a board member for Better Life Insurance, took the lead in organizing a local walk to raise awareness about hunger in the community.

His efforts in Lincoln led to significant success, raising more than 11,000 pounds and dollars in its first year. The event quickly expanded, and by its third year, it had grown to include every Catholic parish in Lincoln, raising an impressive 30,500 pounds and dollars. In 2024, the event became year-round, bringing in a staggering 47,500 pounds and dollars to the CSS Lincoln Food Market.

“Through St. Vincent de Paul, I’ve seen firsthand the reality of food insecurity in our own neighborhoods,” Hosek said. “That’s why I’ve chosen to support CSS, because I know how much of an impact their work has on people in need.”

This year’s gala also featured a silent auction, which made its debut at the event. Previously a part of the CSS Golf Classic, the silent auction added a new element to the evening. Attendees bid on a variety of items, with all proceeds benefiting CSS programs.

Thanks to a record amount in corporate sponsorships, donations toward a match, and funds raised through the silent auction, CSS is poised to continue its vital work in the community.

The Celebration of Hope Gala was a powerful reminder of the collective strength of service and compassion. The evening highlighted the incredible impact CSS continues to make in the lives of those it serves.
