The Serra Club of Lincoln recently presented scholarships to students who won the organization’s essay contest.
Members of the Serra Club of Lincoln are Catholic men who are active in their parishes and committed to promoting vocations to the priesthood and religious life. They also strive to encourage members, through education, to fulfill vocations to service.
Each year, the Serra Club invites eighth-grade students from Catholic schools to participate in an essay contest. This year’s theme was inspired by Pope Francis’ call for all Catholics to become “Pilgrims of Hope.” Students were asked to reflect on the message, share personal experiences of hope or hopelessness, and describe how they plan to live out hope during the Jubilee Year.
More than 200 eighth-graders from Catholic elementary schools in Lincoln submitted essays. The winners were honored at a Serra Club luncheon April 4, where they received certificates and scholarships to Pius X High School. They are Ava Lowrey of St. Teresa School, who received a $1,000 scholarship for first place; Charley Cary of Blessed Sacrament School, who received a $500 scholarship for second place; and Dani Davis of St. Michael School, who received a $250 scholarship for third place.
Blaise Beauclair of St. Teresa, Frannie Matthes of St. Joseph, and Elijah Heftie of Cathedral received certificates for fourth, fifth, and sixth place.
