Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (MTKO) in Lincoln is seeking volunteers to help during the 29th annual “Huskers Helping the Homeless” event the weekend of Sept. 20.
The event raises awareness and funds for Matt Talbot’s year-round hunger relief and homeless prevention services.
Matt Talbot provided nearly 250,000 meals last year through on-site prepared meals and food pantries – a 59% increase over the past five years. An average of 246 onsite meals are served every day, with staff assisting more than 3,000 individuals through over 55,000 outreach and homeless prevention services annually.
To meet these needs, MTKO is gathering volunteers to accept monetary donations on behalf of Matt Talbot. Volunteers are needed before the Nebraska vs. Michigan football game Saturday, Sept. 20, to collect donations in downtown Lincoln. Shifts are also available at grocery stores Sept. 18-20
Shifts are 90 minutes long, and there are multiple locations available throughout the city. Volunteers receive a donation bucket, signage, and a commemorative t-shirt.
Huskers Helping the Homeless will be headquartered Sept. 20 at Tower Square, 13th and P streets, offering free activities for all ages, such as yard games, cookie decorating, and face painting.
“The money raised during this event supports our operations 365 days a year and brings us closer to our vision of defeating hunger and homelessness in Lincoln,” said Alynn Sampson, executive director.
Volunteers may sign up at mtko.org/events.
