The next One Book + One Diocese book discussion presented by the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln will be held Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. at Aquinas High School in David City.
This is the third of four presentations. It will feature Father Adam Sughroue, pastor of Presentation Parish in Bellwood and St. Francis in David City (Center), speaking on the book “Fire & Light: Learning to Receive the Gift of God” by Father Jacques Philippe.
“Fire & Light” is a series of essays linked together by Father Philippe’s examination of spiritual growth. The topics covered include interior peace, Mary, prayer, virtues and the Eucharist.
Father Philippe includes a chapter on true and false freedoms in the book. “There is no freedom without obedience to a truth greater than ourselves,” he writes.
“In a time where relativism seems to be everywhere ,it is important to recognize truth has a name, and His name is Jesus Christ,” Father Sughroue said in regard to the search for true freedom in today’s culture.
The One Book + One Diocese book discussion evenings are part of the diocese’s observation of this Jubilee Year.
“It’s a chance for us to come together as a diocese, focus on these books by a truly inspirational and insightful writer, and discuss and learn together from our priests and fellow parishioners the wisdom found in each book,” said Dennis Kellogg, director of communications of the diocese.
The book presentation and discussion at Aquinas High School in David City at 6 p.m. Aug. 26 will last about an hour. Refreshments will be available.
One more One Book + One Diocese book discussion evening is scheduled this year. Father Ryan Kaup will speak on Father Philippe’s book “Interior Freedom” Nov. 21 in Lincoln. Previous discussions were held in Holdrege and Seward.
All are encouraged to attend the events in person, but they will also be streamed live and available on demand on the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln YouTube channel.
“It’s helpful to read the book before the discussion, but it’s not essential,” Kellogg said. “The discussion itself can also provide a good foundation that’s helpful as you read the book, or maybe prompt you to read it again.”
All of the books featured in the One Book + One Diocese program are available to purchase individually or at a discounted price as a bundle from Gloria Deo in Lincoln.
