We are all familiar with our five senses: sight, smell, hearing, feeling and tasting. On Saturday, June 27, we held our second annual “Summer Eve’s Celebration” at the Whiskey Run Creek Winery in Brownville. It was an evening in which we celebrated the existence of our St. Francis Center, located in Auburn, the hub out of which we serve needy individuals and families who live in southeastern Nebraska.

Since opening in 2000, we have provided, astonishingly, more than $1.5 million of total assistance to individuals and families in the southeastern sector of the diocese of Lincoln.
During that wonderful evening, Steve and Marilyn Woerth purchased my gourmet, multi-course meal which was on the silent auction. This time, like many others in the past, I brought everything with me to prepare at the purchasers’ home.

Steve and Marilyn live on a beautiful acreage near Peru. After arriving I received a tour of the grounds and enjoyed seeing the beautiful trees, flowers, vegetable garden and pond. After the tour, it was time to cook!

Those present were the host couple, Steve and Marilyn Woerth; Rich and Andrea Witt; Eston and Ann Clarke; and Jim and Kathy Florence. The menu included wheat crackers, two types of cheeses and prosciutto ham, and wine. This was followed by an ensalada verde with fresh basil and tomatoes from Steve and Marilyn’s garden. After this came the main course, a chicken and sausage paella, followed by chocolate and honey sundae with a foofoo cookie with raspberry filling on the side.

It was a fun evening in which between the dinner and the tour of the acreage, we exercised our God-given five senses!

I would like to thank Steve and Marilyn (as well as their guests) for purchasing the dinner! I learned that a husband’s recollection on how he met his wife sometimes differs slightly from the perspective of the wife’s, and that Rich is the first person I have met who raises rabbits.

Thanks to all who read this column, and to all of our benefactors who support us in our mission of loving Jesus, who lives in the poor and needy.
