On a beautiful autumn afternoon, I received a phone call from a man I have known for years. I was expecting the call but did not know exactly what day or time it would come.

“Father, can you pick me up? I was just released!” Released from prison, that is.

This is a man who spent a handful of years in prison, and after being assigned to work release, having worked perhaps four to six months in order to save up money for a security deposit and first month’s rent, was paroled.

As I pulled up, I noticed he had a garbage sack of clothes, and one small box of personal belongings which included his Catholic bible, rosary and prayer books. In other words, at his feet were all of his earthly possessions.

His smile was infectious. As we drove away, I could not help but notice he was looking at the beautiful colors of the leaves that were changing colors and the horses along the side of the road.

Knowing that if CSS did not intervene, he would be eating and sleeping on the floor of his newly-rented apartment, I made several phone calls to my wonderful staff. Later that afternoon, the basics were delivered to his apartment: a bed, table and chairs, living room furniture, kitchenware, towels, and other essentials. His concerns were few: finding out where the nearest Catholic Church was (with the schedule of Masses and confessions), and the bus route and schedule in order to make it to work every day.

I am grateful to Almighty God that this man has responded to His grace, and that the Catholic faith is what is most important in his life.

I am also thankful that God has inspired our many benefactors to donate the above-stated items that have helped make his new apartment a home. Before leaving that day, I blessed his new abode.

On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10, Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska conducted one of its bi-annual furniture and appliance drives. I am most grateful for the many items that were donated, but must admit it was the lightest drive I can remember.

Please say a prayer for this man as he begins a new and important chapter in his life, that he remains strong in the faith because real freedom is freedom from sin and death. Please consider helping us spiritually with your prayers and penances, materially with items around your home and farm not needed, and financially according to your means so we can continue to help the many individuals that come to us.

Please remember that you and your family will remain in our prayers!
