Recently, a young single woman from Lincoln, estranged from her family, found herself homeless and alone on the streets in another bigger city. We all know how cold it has been.

After meeting another young woman with a boy without shoes, the first woman gave some of the little money she had left so the mother could get her boy some shoes. She remembers being criticized by another homeless person who said, “You’re in no position to be helping others, your homeless and it’s winter!”

But, she thought, as she sat on a bench with snow all around, ‘if I help this boy, God and His Blessed Mother will help me!’

Providentially we found out about her situation, arranged for her safe return and she is now, with our help, off the streets, in an apartment, and about to begin working a new job.

I am happy to announce that on Sunday, Feb. 28, Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska will be holding its 29th annual Celebration of Caring banquet at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln. The social hour begins at 4:30 p.m. with the dinner/program at 6 p.m.

This year Norman and Sharon Timmerman from Indianola will be receiving the Cor Christi award (which is translated ‘Heart of Christ’) for their love for Jesus evidenced by their love of neighbor.

During my ‘state of the diocese’ report, I will share that, by the grace of God and the generosity of our supporters, we have helped more than 16,000 families and more than 37,000 individuals across the diocese, with more than 192,000 points of contact with nearly 2.6 million dollars of cash and in-kind assistance across the 24,000 square miles of the diocese of Lincoln. I will also have the opportunity to give everyone a peek into the future and share what is new.

I hope you will be able to join us this year, but if not, please pray for the success of this yearly banquet.

Please remember that you, your family and intentions are remembered in our daily prayers and Masses. May God bestow abundant graces this year and beyond!
