Pius X Wins $25,000 through State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive® Contest
After a week-long campaign to promote safe driving among teens, Pius X High School has received second place in State Farm’s 2013 Celebrate My Drive® contest, resulting in a $25,000 grant for the school. During the week of October 18-26, 2013, Pius X competed with more than 2,000 high schools across the country to win one of five first place $100,000 grants and forty five $25,000 grants awarded by State Farm in the large school category. The winning check will be presented to Pius X by State Farm officials on December 10, 2013 at halftime during the varsity boys’ home basketball game.
The online voting contest took place during National Teen Safe Driving Week, during which Pius X held an assembly in conjunction with the Nebraska State Patrol and State Farm officials to educate students on impaired and distracted driving. Students, parent volunteers, Pius X alumni, and numerous members of the community participated during the contest period by going online to make a daily pledge to drive safely.
Once the second place finish was confirmed, an anonymous donor came forward to generously match the grant with an additional $20,000 gift, providing Pius X with a total of $45,000 (less expenses). Winning funds from Celebrate My Drive® and the matching donation will go toward a number of capital improvements and academic programs at Pius X including:
• Programs and scholarships to enhance student driver safety
• Performing Arts Center lighting and electrical upgrades
• New computers for the writing lab/WordStruck literary program
• Restroom renovations
• Computer desks for the Business department
• Equipment and funding toward our Theology, Social Studies and English departments
• Support for our Campus Ministry program
“Once again, the Pius X students, families and greater Lincoln community rallied together in this contest to secure this generous $25,000 grant for our school,” Principal Tom Korta reflects. “We are extremely grateful to State Farm for this award, but more importantly, for their ongoing commitment toward promoting safe driving among our teens.”
As the central Catholic high school in Lincoln, Pius X is now in its 58th year of providing excellence in secondary education, serving 1,114 students in grades 9-12.
