Catholic Schools Week and 125 Years of Grace

St. Joseph School, Beatrice, has much to celebrate this year for Catholic Schools Week. Since its opening in 1888 as a two room schoolhouse for first through twelfth grade, it has withstood the changes of the times and battled many storms to remain faithful and strong. Now 125 years later, thanks to the hard work and dedication of generations of St. Joseph parishioners, priests and Sisters, St. Joseph School proves once again that it is a building made of living stones. The stones are built upon the corner stone of Jesus Christ, who “is the reason for this school, the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes, the model of its faculty and the inspiration for its students.” The living stones of St. Joseph School include the parishioners who provide financial and prayerful support; nine dedicated teachers with an average teaching experience of 10 years who guide each child to achieve his or her unique potential; committed staff who contribute to the spirit of joy and responsibility in our school community; and 82 students in preschool through fifth grade who thrive in this caring, close-knit community that nurtures their intellect, creativity, and leadership, while instilling a joy of learning, spiritual values, and social responsibility. Red Raven Daycare is also housed within the school and is a valued presence and support to parents and children.

In addition to the fun days planned for Catholic Schools Week indicated on the schedule, we are looking forward to our 125th day of school on which we will celebrate our anniversary in a special way with a “Pioneer Day”. Each classroom has designed and contributed a square for an anniversary quilt by which to remember this milestone. On December 13, Bishop James Conley celebrated Mass in thanksgiving for the 125 years of existence of St. Joseph School and took time afterwards to answer questions from the school children. The biggest event of the year for adults is the annual Sweetheart Gala on Saturday, February 15, 6:00 p.m.. This is the primary fundraiser for the school and participants enjoy a social evening of dining and bidding on auction items at the Holiday Inn for only $25 a person. Tickets are available at the school office (402-223-5033).

Come to the Children’s Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 26th at St. Joseph Church and visit the school after Mass during the open house until noon to witness for yourself the good that God is accomplishing at St. Joseph School.
