Student Awarded Silver Key
Mary Theresa (“Tess”) Wahlmeier has been named a Silver Key recipient for the Mid-West Region in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. She is a senior at St. Cecilia High School and was also recently named a Regent Scholar for the State of Nebraska. Her career goal is to use her creative talents in the field of English and journalism specifically or in the broader field of communications.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program celebrated its 90th year in 2013 – a long standing tradition of encouraging the next generation of gifted writers and artists. Students are able to experience the competitive nature of breaking through to acknowledgement and recognition at regional and national levels. Alumni recipients include such well-known names as Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin and many more.
Tess was one of four students in the State of Nebraska to receive the Silver Key recognition. She actually received two Silver Key awards, one in the category of Personal Essay/Memoir with her work entitled “Jesus Reflected in Me” and the other in the category of Persuasive Writing with her work entitled “Abortion: We Can All Live Without It”.
Tess is the daughter of Patrick and Debbie Wahlmeier of Juniata and will graduate from St. Cecilia’s this May. In support of her desire to be a professional writer, she has demonstrated the needed interest and perseverance in writing at all levels and has attained honors and recognition for her writing skills which include publication of one of her poems and her essay in a state-wide newsletter as well as receiving writing recognition from the Catholic Daughters annual writing challenge.
