Pius X Trap Shooter Ben Keaschall Awarded the John Liescheski Memorial Scholarship
Pius X senior Ben Keaschall has been awarded the John Liescheski Memorial Trap Shooting Scholarship. Phillip and Joan Liescheski established the scholarship in May of 2010 in memory of their son John who passed away on May 15, 2008 from a heart complication. John was a member of both the Pius X football and trap teams. The $500 scholarship provides tuition assistance to a junior student on the Pius X Trap Shooting Team who maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher and is awarded based on the trap shooting highest season average.
Keaschall, son of Craig and Natalie Keaschall of St. Teresa Parish, was a member of Pius X’ #1 Squad at this year’s statewide competition, the Cornhusker High School Trapshoot, held May 1st-3rd in Doniphan, Neb. The meet is the largest of its kind in the nation, attracting college trap coaches from across the Midwest. Pius X’s growing trap program this year placed 2nd and 3rd place in Handicap Teams out of more than 300 teams, and had two individual medalists – junior Mason Steele (1st Place, 20-21 yard Handicap) and senior Alex Dewald (1st Place, 18-19 Yard Handicap). Pius X competes in the Central Division of the Eastern Cornhusker Trapshooting Conference (ECTC).
In recognition of his hard work both on and off the range, Keaschall was presented with the John Liescheski Memorial Scholarship at the Trap team banquet held on May 10, 2014. “Ben qualified through good grades and being on our #1 squad,” Pius X Trap Team Coach Dave Tunink explains. “There are a lot of students with good grades in that group, so it was very competitive.” Coach Tunink adds: “Ben works hard and tries hard. He is one of those kids that is passionate and wears his emotions on his sleeve.”
