A new program to prevent bullying and encourage positive peer-to-peer relationships is being formed at Pius X, thanks in part to a $500 grant provided by the ThunderBOLT Fun Run Endowment. The new organization, Pius Ambassadors, will begin in the coming school year.
Pius Ambassadors is a program that seeks to identify and help students who are bullied or hurt by other students, and assist students who are new to Pius X to integrate well and feel a sense of belonging. The program also seeks to provide peer-to-peer support of students who struggle with diagnoses such as Asperger’s, helping them to assimilate and be treated with dignity and respect. Trained student Ambassadors also will be reaching out to students who are shy, isolated or who struggle socially, helping them to develop new relationships and friendships. Importantly, the Pius Ambassadors program aims to promote the appreciation and celebration of diversity and cultural differences within the entire student body.
“There are incredible students in our school who are well adjusted and able to manage high school well, and have the ability and desire to help other students,” Pius X Director of Guidance Jan Frayser explains. “With initial training and ongoing support, these students can infiltrate our student body and help their fellow students who are struggling. Without question, this organization will rely on our Catholic faith and its teachings.” Frayser says the funds from the grant will be used to provide Ambassadors with a one-day training, with guest speakers, group discussions, and learning materials to be used to implement what has been learned.
The $10,000 ThunderBOLT Fun Run endowed fund was established in March of 2014 to benefit Pius X’s academic departments or one of the numerous school-sponsored clubs or activities. Nine applicants for this year’s grant were considered, and Pius Ambassadors was selected to be the fund’s first ever recipient.
The ThunderBOLT Fun Run endowment was made possible by sponsorships and event proceeds from the annual run that draws parents, students, alumni and Lincoln community members of all ages each summer. The family-friendly event includes a 1 mile run/walk and a competitive 5K, with cash prizes awarded to the top finishers. This year’s Fun Run will take place on the morning of Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Holmes Lake Park.
