Two Cathedral Students Honored
Cathedral eighth graders Ryli Jarchow and Dustin Clough were recognized by Elks Lodge #80 on March 15th as "Teens of the Year". Amy Jacobsen, who emceed the event, spoke eloquently about the influence of young teens like Dustin and Ryli: "This is one of our greatest Elk events because it's about investing in our future. We aren't necessarily seeking out the best academic students - though many are - because we value character and hard work above all else. The students here exemplify that, and that is a big credit to their amazing families."
Roughly a dozen Lincoln-area schools were represented at the award banquet, including Diocesan friends St. Joseph's and St. John's.
Nancy Jarchow, mother of Ryli, noted, "It's interesting that we actually know many of these young people from other schools. As a matter of fact, one of the girls was in early childhood care back when her and Ryli were babies. It's pretty incredible to sit back today and see what amazing young people they've become."
Sean Clough, father of Dustin, felt it was special for his son and his family. "Dustin is not the type of kid to push himself out in front of the crowd. When we heard about this honor we actually kept it secret for quite a while! We think Dustin is a great kid, and I know he's done amazing things for Cathedral and his classmates, so it's nice to see him recognized."
Larry Bratt, who is currently the "Exalted Ruler" of Elks Lodge 80, ended the event with powerful words: "I spent over 25 years in law enforcement. I'd often go home to my wife and be so cynical, so beaten down, so sure that our youth are on the wrong track. Now, as a man with grown children, I look at all of these young people and realize that there is much to hope for in our future. Thank you to them, and their families."
Mrs. Arlene Wiebusch commented that she saw Dustin as instrumental in upholding the standard and legacy of the Soldiers of Saint Sebastian during a time of transition. She also applauded Ryli for her unwavering commitment to completing any task put in front of her. Principal Jeremy Ekeler thanked the Elks Lodge and reinforced Wiebusch's words, saying, "We have many great Eagles at Cathedral, many who deserve accolades. But at Cathedral we don't shoot for accolades, we go about our business with a foundation of character and a strong work ethic. That's why Dustin and Ryli are deserving, and we're all so proud of them."
