Pius X Students Build Machines to Open an Umbrella
On Wednesday, March 23, Pius X students in Accelerated Physics and AP Physics (PACE) participated in the 23rd annual Pius X Machine Contest based on the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Rube Goldberg was a Pulitzer Prize winner whose cartoons depicted complicated machines that performed simple tasks.
In this spirit, 15 teams of students built machines that had to, in at least 20 different steps, Open An Umbrella. The teams were judged on their ingenuity and on whether their machine successfully completed the task. The winners were: 1st place - Geesh (theme: “Sports”) Will Addy, Daniel Albin, and Nick Aldridge; 2nd place - Stupefy (theme: “Harry Potter”) Anna Boothe, Kathleen Medill; 3rd place - The Toys (theme: “Fun & Games”) David Liescheski, Daniel Robertson, Nick Scholz, Nathan Ullman; and Judges’ Choice - Orphan Tears (theme: “Singing In The Rain”) Agnes Fiedler, Fiona Fitzgerald, Rilee Sukup.
The Accelerated Physics and AP Physics (PACE) classes are taught by Mr. Jeremy Scheffler.
