You may have heard about some petitions being circulated around Nebraska. I am hopeful that by now you have signed the two Christian petitions regarding abortion and that you have had nice, long talks with those who were trying to circulate the dangerous, deceptive, and demeaning petition which could declare abortion a constitutional right in Nebraska. Imagine that – abortion being declared a fundamental right! Satan cannot love. But if he could, he would love that.

I recently had a conversation with Chris*, a very pro-abortion petition circulator. Chris knocked on our front door Saturday, June 29, holding, holding his clipboard tight against his chest. When I stepped out onto our front porch, he asked me if I would like to sign a petition to “protect women” in Nebraska. Since that was all he said (he did not read the ballot language to me as required by law), I asked him to read the approved language of the petition, which reads in part:

“All persons shall have a fundamental right to abortion until fetal viability… Fetal viability means the point in pregnancy when, in the professional judgment of the patient’s treating health care practitioner, there is a significant likelihood of the fetus’ sustained survival outside the uterus without the application of extraordinary medical measures.”

Over the course of the next 30 minutes, I asked Chris a series of questions, including why it would be good to sign the petition. He explained that there is currently no such law in place in Nebraska and this would amend the Constitution in order to make this a law. I clarified that I wasn’t asking about the legal aspect, I was asking why it was good, meaning that I was looking for a moral reason. Chris then gave it another try. He explained that such a law would prevent all the bad consequences which happen after an unplanned pregnancy. I then pressed him on specifics. The specifics he provided were economic hardship and, well…, economic hardship.

Chris tried to answer each of my questions, but in his attempts, it was clear that he had never thought deeply about the matter. Instead of facts, he relied on information fed to him from abortion advocates such as Planned Parenthood. As a result, he did not know things like the percentage of abortions performed because of rape or the serious medical condition of the mother, he had never heard of Kermit Gosnell, and he was unaware that the “back alley” abortion claims of the abortion activists in the early 1970s and late 1960s were fabricated, as admitted by people like Dr. Bernard Nathanson.

I got the impression that Chris was not even persuaded by his own reasoning. Additionally, he was running out of motivation. That is when he said he had resigned himself to the fact that I wasn’t going to sign the petition, and said he would move on.

Sadly, the pro-abortion petition drive will likely succeed in getting the initiative on the ballot this November. It is therefore essential that we learn about the ballot initiatives we will likely see in November and that we help our friends and family do so as well.

This is because we need to vote on the initiatives. If any of us skips voting, or if we skip over the initiatives, Chris’ abortion initiative could become the law of the land in Nebraska. This is because the initiative does not require the approval of a majority of Nebraskans in order that it become enshrined in our constitution. The measure needs only more positive votes than negative votes in the November election. Therefore, we need to know how to vote, and we need to cast our vote

We need to do the same for the pro-life initiative. Failing to vote could really help Planned Parenthood and the other abortion activists. It would then lead to the death of millions of innocent babies, and destroy the lives and souls of many others, such as the men who pressure mothers into having an abortion, the people who work in the abortion industry, abortion advocates, and the mothers who will have abortions.

The pro-abortion initiative would open the door for abortions to happen at a much later stage than ever before in Nebraska. It would also eliminate the need for the parental consent in order for a young girl to have an abortion. The pro-abortion initiative also uses very vague language, giving abortion advocates a lot of room to mislead and deceive people. For instance, it does not require a doctor’s involvement in the decision to have an abortion. It therefore allows abortion advocates to recommend and support the abortion. Who has a financial stake in whether or not the mother has an abortion? In this situation, the very person recommending the abortion.

These are just a few of the horrible things which the pro-abortion initiative would bring about. A great resource for more information on this matter is found at the Nebraska Catholic Conference.

Hopefully my discussion with Chris prompted him to think more deeply about his agenda. If nothing else, it kept him from gaining a signature or two further down the block that day. Regardless, please join me in praying for the conversion of Chris and the other confused and misguided people who know not what they are doing to Christ and their neighbors. And go to the above link to learn more about this extremely important matter so you and your friends and family are ready for November 5, 2024.
