I am happy to announce that Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska is holding its 15th annual Trumpet Fest Sunday, Feb. 11 at Pius X High School in Lincoln, at 3 p.m.
As in past years, it is being held in memory of Mac McCune and Dennis Schneider. A hat will be passed during the intermission for a free-will offering. All proceeds will be used to help the many needy individuals and families that come to us in crisis.
So far our scheduled performers include Darryl White, Kevin Murray, Barb Schmit, John Tavlin, Maria Pytlik, L.J. McCormick, Louie Eckhard, and the UNL Trumpet Studio. Just as in previous years, there will be more!
Several years ago, I found an old, non-functioning trumpet in the warehouse section of our St. Louise Gift & Thrift Store. I never thought it was easy to play the trumpet but was tempted to think, ‘How hard can it be?’
Kevin Murray kindly found someone to restore it to good working order for me to play. He even went as far as to suggest if I practiced really hard, perhaps I could play a little simple number at the next Trumpet Fest.
After giving me a few preliminary instructions, I gave it a try. All I can say is that I was glad the rest of the office was empty. It sounded horrific. Kevin’s offer still stands to give me lessons….
I guess my thoughts were such because every year each trumpet player makes it look easy. I know it is not so because of the hours spent practicing and playing on a daily basis. I cannot describe how beautiful each player sounds. This event is one that I look forward to each and every year in a special way.
I would like to thank Kevin Murray for organizing this event, and all of the trumpet players and supporting musicians who plan to play.
I am also thankful to Father James Meysenberg and everyone at Pius X High School for their hospitality. I pray you will be able to join us this year and if not, please pray for good weather, for the musicians, their families, and the success of this year’s Trumpet Fest. St. Cecilia, the patron saint for musicians, pray for us!
