Not long ago, a man lost his job. He was very stressed because he was married with children. Despite having historically low unemployment rates, these things happen for any number of reasons. Like many families, up until the job loss, they were living paycheck to paycheck.

Fortunately after several months, this man was able to find another good job but, in the interim, the family fell behind with their rent payments. Because of the generosity of our supporters, we were able to step in and prevent an eviction.

I am happy to announce that on Saturday, April 6, we are holding our annual Bishop Glennon Flavin Memorial Sporting Clays Tournament at the Oak Creek Sporting Club near Brainard.  If you do not know what sporting clays are, I like to describe it like ‘golf with a shotgun.’ Participants go from station to station shooting clay targets that fly from all directions. There is even one station (one of my favorites) where the clay target travels on the ground. Since the clay bounces around because of the irregularities of the ground, it is quite a challenge.

Like previous years, there are different levels of sponsorship: shell, tourney and individual stations sponsorships. Corporate teams are $650, and the price for an individual shooter is $125. The registration fee includes a buffet meal, 100 clay targets, shells, and one free ticket that can be used in one of the shooting games.  There are opportunities to sponsor priests, too.

Each team is made up of five persons. If you do not have a team, we can put you on one. Teams will start on the course at 10-minute intervals starting at 9 a.m.

Every year before I get started, I personally apologize ahead of time for my shooting. If you are concerned that you are not a crack shot, no worries, neither am I, but I always have a blast. One year, I got lucky and won the Annie Oakley game because the other person hiccupped when he shot....

All shooters must wear eye and ear protection. ATVs are welcome. Golf carts are available for $15 per shooter and must be reserved two weeks before the event.

As in previous years, all proceeds will be used to help needy individuals and families like the one mentioned above. If you are unable to attend, please pray for the success of the event and please spread the word. I hope to see you there April 6!
