Whenever someone says, “I have good news and bad news, which do you want first?” I always want the bad news first, so the good news will later cheer me up. I have heard it said that, ‘there is nothing worse than hearing bad news after good.’

The bad news is that after almost six years, St. Gianna Women’s Homes will be stopping our First Friday Fish Fry which benefitted St. Gianna’s.

We are stopping it not because it wasn’t fine, fantastic, and flavorful and fun, but …. and here comes the good news … we will be starting—later this year or early next year—a coffee and gelato shop on the campus of our beautiful St. Joseph campus (located on 23rd and O streets in Lincoln), with all of the proceeds going to help needy families.

Some of the space is what we used for our first Friday Fish Frys. Since we have to live within our means and spend only the money God has given us through our generous donors, this is another way of generating funds for the poor.

Recently, we served a dinner for our many fish fry volunteers and served them some delicious gelato, a portent to come. It was a fine and fitting end to a delicious meal prepared by Dave Walbrecht.

I would like to thank our many volunteers who selflessly helped us make around $50,000 after expenses! I would also like to thank our many loyal patrons who came, many of them regulars, to dine and visit.

Another bit of good news, as a way of thanking our loyal fish fry customers, we will serve free samples of our gelato and other items made in house at CSS at 23rd and O streets in Lincoln on Friday, May 1 and Friday, June 5 from 5 to 7 p.m.

This is a way of thanking you, and at the same time giving you a chance to taste what is to come. We hope you are able to come and enjoy these delicious treats!
