When a person, young or old, is baptized, the very life of the Blessed Trinity is infused into the soul, which is Love Itself. With the good example of loving, self-less parents, little children learn not only what Love is but how to return love to God and their neighbors.

Recently, a little 8-year-old girl named Rebecca Wacker won her age bracket of the summer reading program at the Shelby Community Library. She was awarded a $100 gift card to Walmart. I can imagine that after acquiring a gift card like this, many 8-year-old girls would immediately think of many little girl things to buy…. but not this little girl.

After receiving the gift card, she decided to buy things and donate them to the women and children at St. Gianna’s Women’s Home. Doesn’t love spread like fire? On hearing what she did, her 11-year-old sister Rachel decided to add $40 that she made from her cookie and lemonade stand this summer at the farmer’s market to the pot!

But they were not done. Their mother Joelle also pitched in a great big box of size-6 diapers. We are grateful to their little brother, too, because he did not need the diapers as he is a recent graduate of the Potty Training Institute at their home.

After talking to the Marian Sisters at St. Gianna, the two young sisters had fun picking out clothes and some toys for the moms and children.

You might think that this is the end of the story, but it’s not. After the kids’ mom posted on her Facebook page what the girls did, some of their family and friends matched their donation. They were elated when they came down and delivered the money and goods to Curt Krueger, the director of social services for the Diocese of Lincoln. I can tell you that the ladies and children at St. Gianna’s are very grateful.

I would like to thank Rebecca and her sister Rachel for their love and generosity. I also would like to thank their parents because good fruit does not fall far from the tree. Thanks also to their family member and friends who also helped. They all did it for the singular reason-for the love God and His presence in their neighbors.

St. Gianna, pray for us!!
