During high school, my dream car was a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a 454 cubic inch V-8. However, because of my $1.65 per hour part time job I settled for a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a 225 cubic inch slant six engine with three on the tree (this means it had a manual transmission). It went from 0 to 60, but it took a while.
The only problem with this vehicle was that, in addition to it not having air conditioning, I did not know how to drive a stick shift transmission. I learned myself by driving it home and later to work. I remember being real excited when I stopped at a red light on a hill with someone on my tail. The person behind me probably wondered why I burned a little rubber. I only knew enough to step on it as I let out the clutch. Those were the days!
Recently Gary Bouc with the Capitol City Ford & Mustang Club asked me if he could help sponsor and put together a car show to benefit St. Gianna Women’s Homes. The event will be held at our St. Joseph Center, located on 23rd and O Street, from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, May 20. Breakfast, lunch, coffee and gelato will be available at Gianna’s Java & Gelato.
There is no fee for participants or spectators – a free will offering can be made at the time of the event. All proceeds from this fun event will go to St. Gianna’s Women’s Homes, a safe place for women escaping domestic violence and abortion along with their children.
I guess I am not too old to learn about cars, for hanging around Gary, I finally at my age learned the difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger. Needless to say, my 1974 Plymouth Duster had neither. If you are interested in learning the difference between the two, and in seeing some neat cars while supporting a great cause, please join us May 20 for our first Catholic Social Services Car Show & Shine! I would like to thank Gary, our sponsors, and all who have helped and will help to make this a special event. Who knows, perhaps we will see a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a 360 cubic inch V-8 with 4 on the floor? St. Gianna, pray for us!
