Recently, a homeless man who is living in his car (a car that someone donated to us and we gave to him) showed me his lower lip. He had a three- to four-centimeter squamous cell carcinoma (cancer). He recently had it surgically removed.
I would like to thank his surgeon and St. Elizabeth Hospital for their help, as well as a donor who helped us place him in a long-term motel for two weeks so that he might heal properly. Can you imagine sitting in a hot car, post-operatively? After this, he will be able to return to his new job and work toward renting a small, one-bedroom apartment before the snow flies.
I am happy to announce that Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska will hold our annual CSS Memorial Golf Classic & Auction Friday, Aug. 11. This year we are honoring Wendy Engles from Auburn. Wendy was married to Bob Engles on August 6, 1971 at the Newman Center. Wendy was an active member of St. Joseph Church in Auburn, where she taught CCD, and volunteered at our St. Francis Gift & Thrift Store. She was a teacher for many years. She truly loved God and neighbor during her earthly sojourn.
Wendy entered eternity with living faith in her soul on April 30, 2016. We are privileged to honor her this year!
Our silent auction will feature a number of jewels, including a cherry 1992 Cadillac Eldorado, a pop-up camper, a one-week stay at the Morritt’s Tortuga Club in the Grand Cayman Islands, an overnight in Denver with Broncos and Patriot tickets, golf packages, Husker football tickets, a dinner cooked by yours truly, and many, many more wonderful and unique items.
You need not be present to bid on these items! Just visit qtego.net/qlink/cssgolf to register and bid! As in previous years, all net proceeds will go to assist individuals and families like the gentleman mentioned above. All fore, I mean, for the love of Jesus Who lives in the poor and needy in a special manner (Mt 25:31-46).
Please know that we at Catholic Social Services pray for our benefactors on a daily basis in our Masses offered in our chapels, prayers and penances. Fore!
