Bishop James Conley celebrated the Chrism Mass April 14 at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. He blessed the three sacred oils used in the sacraments throughout the diocese — Chrism, the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens.

The priests of the diocese renewed the priestly vows made at their ordinations during the Chrism Mass, and priests celebrating milestone anniversaries (known as “jubilees”) were given special recognition at a dinner with their brother priests.

Students at Little Flowers Childcare Center in Lincoln presented the stories of Holy Week April 10. The children dressed in costumes to present events from Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, and the Stations of the Cross. Little Flowers Childcare Center is run by the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Mercy.

The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln includes more than 130 parishes across 40 counties in southern Nebraska, serving 74,000 Catholics. These Southern Nebraska Register photos are from a Sunday Mass at St. Luke’s Czech Catholic Shrine in Loma. The church was built in 1912. The parish closed in 1992, but reopened as a shrine dedicated to the Czech Catholic immigrants who settled in Butler and Saunders counties. Father Steven Snitily celebrated the Mass March 16 for the Second Sunday of Lent.

Bishop James Conley presided at the Rite of Election in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln March 9. At the Rite of Election, candidates and catechumens indicate their intention to enter the Catholic Church and each is personally welcomed by the bishop. Several representatives spoke afterward, describing resources for Catholics to learn more about the Church, and to meet new communities.
