Young men and men of all vocations are invited to attend the Wild at Heart retreat July 24–26, led by Deacon Matthew Hecker, Ph.D. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly.
Inspired by the book “Wild at Heart” by John Eldredge, the retreat will explore the deep desires placed within the heart of every man: the longing for adventure, the call to battle for what is good, and the desire to protect and love others with courage and integrity.
Hosted in a silent retreat format, the weekend begins Friday with a 7 p.m. introduction and Mass and concludes Sunday with Mass and lunch at noon. Reading the book in advance is optional but encouraged.
Throughout the retreat, Deacon Hecker will guide participants through Scripture, the wisdom of the saints, and the Church’s rich understanding of masculinity to address questions many men wrestle with: What does it mean to be a man? What is my purpose? How do I live courageously in today’s world?
The retreat also speaks directly to the struggles men face, including pressure to perform, fear of failure, the search for identity and validation, challenges in relationships, and the call to sacrificial love in a culture centered on self-interest and distraction.
Participants will explore how Christ reveals the fullness of authentic masculinity and what it means to live as spiritual warriors marked by virtue, strength, leadership and service. Whether discerning a vocation, navigating marriage or relationships, building a career, or seeking deeper faith, men will find space for honest reflection, spiritual renewal and practical guidance.
“The restlessness in your heart is not something to suppress or ignore,” retreat organizers said. “It is an invitation from God to live fully alive as the man He created you to be.”
Men interested in attending are encouraged to register early. For more information or to register, visit goodcounselretreat.org or call 402-786-2705.
