Remember that recent cold snap? A homeless man came into our main lobby in order to warm himself, for it was a cold day.

When people who are living on the streets come in, I love talking to and getting to know them. When people are living as such, it is often due to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Nevertheless, they are all created in the image and likeness of God.

I noticed right away that in addition to being intoxicated, this man was wearing only a jean jacket and a hoodie underneath; hardly adequate for winter weather. He was sleeping it off.

After waking and seeing me, he raised both arms and wanted to pray. After doing so, one of our staff members made him a care package with ready-made food and water. In addition to finding a warm sleeping bag, I found a big warm winter coat and gloves that someone donated. After helping him put on his new coat, I zipped it up. I even had to help him put his gloves on. He then slowly made it out the door.

I am happy to announce that Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska is holding its 16th annual Trumpet Fest Sunday, Feb. 10 at Pius X High School in Lincoln at 3 p.m. As in past years, it is being held in memory of Mac McCune and Dennis Schneider.

So far, our scheduled performers include Darryl White, Kevin Murray, Barb Schmit, Maria Pytlik, Frank Stroup, Dorothy Applebee, Bruce Worth, the UNL Trumpet Studio and more. Just as in previous years, there will be more!

A hat will be passed during the intermission for free-will offerings. All proceeds will be used to help the many needy individuals and families that come to us in crisis, including the many homeless individuals who we care for. There are some we have helped exit homelessness and others avoid homelessness.

I would like to thank Kevin Murray for organizing this event and all of the trumpet players and supporting musicians who plan to play. I am also thankful to Father James Meysenberg and everyone at Pius X High School for their hospitality.

I pray you will be able to join us this year but if not, please pray for good weather—not only for those helping with and attending Trumpet Fest but also for those who we help, such as the gentleman mentioned above.

Also, please pray for the success of this year’s Trumpet Fest. St. Cecilia, the patron saint for musicians, pray for us!
