Several years ago, Pat Walbrecht (my administrative assistant, A.K.A. secretary) said, “Father, when you travel the diocese to visit the faithful across the 24,000 square miles of the diocese, why not let me drive so you can write, make phone calls, send text messages, check and send emails? Just think of the work you can get done!”
After giving it some thought, I agreed. It has been a blessing. I must confess, as I type these words, we just passed mile marker 324 and the Giltner exit.
While in Hastings, as we were ready to depart, I realized I had not greeted all of the staff so I asked her to wait for a moment while I went back into the office and thrift store. I said, “Pat, wait for me, I will be right back.”
After 10 to 15 minutes I figured I better hurry along; after 10 more minutes or so, I exited the store onto the street and noticed she was gone. I figured she either was hijacked or left to get gas. Knowing it was not like Pat to leave me stranded without a call or text, I reached in my pocket for my cell phone but alas, it was in the vehicle, too (I later found out she had texted me, but a lot of good that did me). I figured since we were low on gas it was the latter.
I then decided to wait on the sidewalk for her return. In God’s providence, I am glad I was left alone and was waiting on the street. For what seemed like a mini-eternity, I was amazed at the number of people who came in for a sack lunch. They all looked like they needed help. One man, who appeared in his 40s, rode up on a bicycle. After greeting him, he entered our office and after a brief moment he rode merrily away with a ready-made meal. He had the look of someone who was in need of assistance.
It was a reminder to me that we were feeding Jesus, day in and day out. Whether it is help with food, clothing, furniture, appliances, vehicles, rent, utilities, grants for counseling or one of the many other ways we help those who come to us, we do it because Jesus is present in them in a special way (Mt 25:31-46). That is why our donors are so special because without you over 40,000 individuals across the diocese would not be helped by Catholic Social Services in some manner.
Please know that we are most grateful, but also know that your reward will be great in heaven.
